BREAKFAST ITEMS
Breakfast Items
In most of the homes where no eggs or bread are consumed the universal problem is what should be prepared for the breakfast in the morning.
In our childhood we used to eat something in the morning before early lunch but we never used to call it breakfast ! l came to know about 'breakfast' word much later.
I remember many delicious items like " Sattu" (Ata of dry fried grains mixed with milk and sugar or "Gud")some sweet " Laddu",Pulverised fried bread ("phodnichi poli")or fried rice. Sometime we used to take "pohe" mixed in curd 'suger and a very tasty "masala mirchi " which I consider delicacy even today. Another item called "Dhirade" was my favorate which this new generation must not have even heared. Most of the times we directly used to take lunch and two Biscuits or a piece of toast and a banana was quite frequent in our so called BF.
Things have changed now .Breakfast and what items one takes in BF is considered very important thing in most homes. Our home is no exception.
Lately I have realized that more than half the time whatever I talk to my wife , is related only to edible items as if that is the only interesting topic left to be talked about !
While taking break fast and offering compliments to her, the discussion starts on what we will have in lunch and while having afternoon tea I talk to her about items like "Samosa", "Bhel "and "Paani Puri." While taking dinner or just after that I request her whether she would like to have Ice cream or strong hot Coffee and if I don't , She will be still busy in kitchen preparing either cold coffee or mango shake !
Life is really cool after retirement !
The breakfast in our home is taken anytime between 8. to 10 am. If it is taken later than 10.30 am it is called Brunch ! It is a regular topic of discussion 'what should we have in BF tomorrow ? ' I don't like "Upama" and my opinion about " pohe " is good only if "Ratlam shev" or some other vatiety of "Shev" is sprinkled over them.. l am told every now and then that my weight is continuously increasing so it is not advisable to have " Shira" in BF. Items like Idali, Dosa , Uttapam or "Appe" are the items which need pre- planning so they cannot be discussed .......Sometime in some week an ordinance type announcement is made that tomorrow we will have "Idli "or "Dosa" in BF.
It is argued ( not discussed) that oily items like Puri, "Thalipith" or Pakodas are not good for health so I should not demand them. and start the fresh conflict . I remember when I was working in the North , I used to relish different Parhatas stuffed with either "aalu" or "Gobi" or "Muli" .Of course fresh Mother Dairy Curd used to be there. Gone are those days !. .Now I feel Parhatas are too heavy items for BF and I have started believing that they spoil the Lunch.Bread sandwiches I like only if I am allowed to apply lots of butter on the bread as someone has moved my cheese !
" Maggie " and "Pasta" I hate and refuse to eat them even in the evening . How my son ate Maggie almost every second day in his childhood is a mystry to me and I observe that he is still loyal to his Maggie ! Pav Bhaji or Vada Pav are very good options but traditionally they are not supposed to be taken in the BF for the reasons not known to me. I have firm belief that " pitza" and " Burgers" are not for my generation of people. They only look good in the advertisements. Omelette and other egg items are banned in our home since ages and bread butter jam has the last priority when all the options are exhausted.
Other day I asked my Co- brother about what he generally takes in the breakfast and I was told that he regularly milk and corn flake but these days have stopped taking anything in BF. He takes only two full meals. No BF, no biscuits and no snacks ! Some person has advocated this new "old theory" to him and he religiously believes in it and tortures himself by following the theory.
I wonder what topic he discusses with his wife !
These days many people have started following different diet theories. The word "vegan" was unheard by me. In this it is advised that anything which is derived from animals including even milk is to be avoided. I think this is absolutely absurd . I love to follow the theory of other person who advises that one must eat something after every two hours . I think that suits to my health and gives me excuse to eat delicious biscuits even at 4 am or just before morning walk !.
Two days back our batchmates met in the morning over a breakfast. The organizer has made arrangements of several items and I think almost everyone ate in abundance . The items which they wanted to eat but are not allowed on the health ground were also happily consumed. The BF was most enjoyable as everyone was happy and even those, who suffer from diabetic enjoyed Jilebi Rasgulla and kalakand !
Looking at my batchmates I concluded that eat whatever you like in BF and be happy. After all life is all about happiness !
