THE MONSOON

In the year 1977 , when I was in IIT Powai my Guide Dr Parmar used to regularly bring an Umbrella while another Professor Dr Banerjee used to bring Umbrella depending on the predicted weather  forecast. One day it so happened that it was raining and  prof. Parmar didnot have his Umbrella while Prof. Banerjee had and he proudly stated that he checks weather report before starting from home...Prof Parmar then jokingly commented. " Actually He brought that umbrella not for rains but for the  hot Sun as he wanted to go home for lunch !

Since then the things have not changed much  for another 30 or 35 years. " Even today when the weather persons  predict  that ""In Delhi  there will be  storm like condition " not a leaf of any tree moves ! Off late l and many others , who have faith in the prediction  say that "this is Calm before the storm!' !!

.For the  last several years predictions of meteorological department were never taken seriously  in India and were subject of laughing stock. There are so many jokes on weather predictions and 7 out of 10 times the predictions used to be wrong in good old days. Some even used to assume that if weather department has predicted rains it will certainly not rain !
Gone are those days now .

Today weather forecasts give reasonably accurate.Information and warnings about cyclons are given well in advance and one observes the  benefits of the predictions when many  lives are saved. Thanks to the dedicated scientists who have now latest ingenious technology available from our own satellites, launched by the great organization ISRO.(Indian Space Research Organization).

The  results  of enormous data handled by meteorological department actually has started helping common men and these days one do come acrossmany  persons  who carefully check weather forcasts  while planning visits in the vacations.
There is however one exception and that is about Monsoon arrival dates and average rain fall. During Monsoon days IMD (Indian Metrological Department)  becomes very active...... so much that on almost every second day they change the date of  Monsoon arrival. Of course there must be assignable reasons for that .Various factors like 'western disturbances' , 'Sevear Heat wave, and 'cyclonic conditions' in two seas on either side of the country keep changing the situation.

In Nagpur every year there is the  confusion on Monsoon arrival.

Nagpur being a central place, faces effect of all four directions or sometime it is immune to all those.and continue to roast people as if the tropic of Cancer has right to do so.!. I tell my friends that there are 3  types of weather conditions in Nagpur..and those are ..hot .. hotter and the hottest !!  The rainy season is actually  "the wet summer" when both heat and humidity merrily play havoc !

If the rains arrive in the last week of May it is called pre-Monsoon . Some time it rains in the second  week of June but many people refuse to call it Mansoon because predicted  Mansoon date for Nagpur  is in  the third or forth week of June. In the second week of June the Sun starts showing its real rage of heat power and news papers  print that the
Monsoon will be delayed . As soon as such news is printed the very next day it starts raining cats and dogs and  there are photographs in the papers of "welcome to    Mansoon"  Some time after first week of June  it does not rain till mid July and one then finds news that Mansoon has eluded the city after early arrival in the first week of June!!   In the nut shell there is still confusion about Monsoon arrival  dates.

Every year before May we go to Pune to avoid scorching heat of summer which is perhaps the only other thing for which Nagpur is known other than the Oranges. The lock down has prevened us to go to Pune this year and we are experiencing  summer in the orange city after long time. There is no fear about 'Sun stroke'  as everyone are in their homes. The term ' Sun stroke' may not be heard  by you if you have not experienced Nagpur summer.

The two recent cyclones " Amphan" and 'Nisarg ' were quite kind to Nagpur weather  and exactly as per the predictions of  weather man after 28 th May there is no need of cooler or air conditioner. Who gives  names to cyclone is still the mystery to me but  effects of cyclones  have removed my fear about 'Nagpur Summer  I know that the three weeks of  June including the longest day are still pending  and what is in the store one doesn't know..One only hopes to continue to  experience this goody goody weather till the Monsoon arrives.
I keep my fingers crossed about weather in June but  I am tempted to state that in Nagpur city the Monsoon has already arrived !
