CALCUTTA CROWD
While watching a movie or any sport event or while in musical concert , ambience and the type of company matters a lot.I experienced this in Calcutta while watching Anupam Kher's 'SARANSH' way back in 1984 . I observed a very disciplined and responsive crowd around me watching the movie in a pin drop silence. The feeling then was no different than watching some MARATHI drama of Ms.Vijaya Mehata or Dr Lagoo in Mumbai.
Later I came to know that Anupam Kher who played the main role was only 28 years old. He played the main role of Retired school teacher of Maharashtrian man and his wife's role was played by Rohini Hattangadi who too was much younger compared to the age of woman she played . Hats off to Director Mahesh Bhatt who dared to select such young persons for the main roles .The theme was about the couple whose young son dies abroad .It was a serious movie and great thing to note for me was. what a superb crowd around me ,which was all the time involved in what was happening on the screen. I liked the movie as much as I liked the spectators in the theater .Never before I witnessed such sensible viewers.
I was in Calcutta for my office work for one week and my hotel was in the Esplanade area which was near the Victoria Memorial. On Sunday morning after break fast I did not know what to do .When I saw a theater which was displaying Dilip Kumar's moovie I decided to see that
After seeing Saransh on Saturday evening I was trying to kill time on Sunday morning in relaxed mood. It was a matinee show and old movie of Dilip kumar but was not a serious movie. Moovie's name was Aazad and in the theater the majority of crowd was of lower income group and Riksha pullers. I might have been the richest person in that crowd. The movie started and on the entry of Dilip kumar crowd welcomed him with shrill whistles .With every song there was excellent and adequate response be the song was serious or Kawwali style
Meena Kumari ,the heroine of the cinema received similar applause .The story was stupid and very ordinary presentation in black and white but C Ramchandra 's music was superb. Crowd knew all that and there was no dearth of enjoyment .Meena kumari's dance hardly displayed any skill but songs were very popular and catchy .As the villain was beaten by Dilip kumar towards the end there was huge excitement among the viewers. The movie ended In a typical style and When I was coming out I could see the joy of victory of their HERO on the faces of every person I noticed.
In two movies I saw crowd of different class and status but the common thing among Calcutta movie watchers was discipline and enjoyment. Though I did not have any friend's company while watching both the cinemas I never had the feeling of watching movie alone . More than the movies I still remember very knowledgeble and wonderful crowd of the great Calcutta !!
