MEANING OF LAGAN
MEANING OF LAGAN
I honestly don't like the idea of going to movie in the multiplex .There is strong reason for that.
At our home till I graduated in 1975, we were allowed to see only 3 or 4 movies in the whole year . While studying in college I saw many movies in less than a rupee with a group of college friends by bunking classes .Those movies were seen in either second class or third class sitting in the front row ! Of course those adventures were never disclosed. The first time I saw the movie from Balcony was with my friend who gave me the treat with three other friends..The movie was Johny Mera Naam
Later when I left home in 1975 and was in Bangalore I saw more than 90 movies in just 9 months . In those days there were 120 theaters in that Garden city.At that time the rate for balcony ticket was Rs 4.65 per person in the best theaters like " Santosh " and Nartaki , both near the Majestic circle. Then in Bombay I watched umpteen number of moovies and continued the habit in Baroda and Faridabad.
After our marriage in 1981 , we saw average 85 to 90 movies each year till 1986. In fact my wife used to be reluctant to come to see movie and many times we used to have minor verbal duets while going to some cinema....... In those fights I used to be the winner .... .Watching so many movies was quite taxing to her as before marriage , she never experienced such an excessive entertainment.Almost all movies I saw with her in Baroda and later in Faridabad were from balcony and balcony tickets rate were between ₹ 5.65 to ₹ 6.45. Buying tickets in black.... meaning spending more money than the actual price , was quite common act in those days, but even in those deals I never spent more than Rs 10 per ticket.
Then a better sense prevailed !
Between 1986 to 2000 I totally stopped watching movies in theaters as my 3 year old son used to protest...and at times his protest used to be so vehement or furious that watching complete moovie became impossible.
So with this background , when I went to see "Lagan" movie in Multiplex in Pune in the year 2001( almost after 15 years) I was shocked. My grown up Son was waiting for my visit to Pune and had planned to see movie named ' Lagan' with me......in which some Aamir khan was playing main role. All those names were new to me.My son told me that we will watch 'Lagan ' in multiplex and I gave my consent thinking ' Multiplex 'was the name of cinema theatre ! After reaching the multiplex I gave Rs 100 to my son to buy tickets for 3 persons. He asked me for more money . So I gave him another 100 rupee note , thinking balcony ticket could be about Rs 40 or 45 now. My son was annoyed with my action ....He almost grabbed my wallet and took two 500 rupees notes and disappeared to buy tickets.
Before we entered the big lobby we were frisked by security person to confirm that no bombs were carried by us ! That was new to me.Such type of checking I experienced only while traveling by air. .....Before I asked for balanced money my son again disappeared and while he was not around I kept myself busy in finding some 'Pune beauties' but failed to spot any and was rather disappointed.
Soon I saw my son and his friend with 3 large size glasses filled with coke and ice and 3 Jumbo size cones filled with pop corns in the trays they were carrying like some waiters ! With those tasteless things we proceeded inside the theater .
When we settled in our seats I demanded balance money from my son and he returned me only 120 or 130 rupees . I was shocked to know each ticket costed Rs 180 and I almost fainted when I was told the cost of cold drinks and Pop corn !
It was atrocious or horrifying or cruel !
I did not recollect any better word about the situation and I confess I was so much disturbed that I could not watch 'Lagan' because I was thinking all the time about the spent money and developed the feeling as if I was cheated .SInce then I never go to movies in multiplex to spend my hard earned money . I allow my son or friends to bear all the expenses, whenever they want my company while seeing any stupid movie.
That day I understood the meaning of 'LAGAN' in the real sense better than anyone else !
