MY HERO
That was the year 1986 when Imran Khan led Pakistan cricket team had toured India for 5 test matches. The result of each of the previous four matches was "draw ' as both teams did not want to loose. Banglore Test was last match of the serese and also turned out to be the last test match of my Hero ....Sunil Gavaskar.
The wicket was prepared in such a manner that there will be definitely result considering all previous four test matches were .without any result. This was evident right from the day one .The great batsmen against spin bowling like Javed miyadad of Pakistan and Dilip Vengsarkar of India could hardly do anything as ball used to turn sharply and may or maynot rise .That was one of the most complex wickets in the history of Cricket. One man however was least perturbed and he was Sunil Manohar Gavaskar standing there like a rock.
I distinctly remember that Sunday which was the third day of the low scoring match .One does not remember exact score card but on the third day about 1 hour after after lunch India was set a target of scoring 216 or 220 odd runs.(One may check records)to win the match and serese.
I was seeing Gavaskar on the TV without missing any ball. Sunny was playing with full confidance and concentration. Suddenly It appeared to me that Arun Govil ,a person who played Rama's role in mega serial Ramayana was batting . I found there was remarkable resemblance between facial expressions of Gavaskar and Govil. The scene was as if Gavaskar was performing some 'puja' with full devotion and concentration like Rama did in the morning episode of Ramayan.
I have never seen any cricketer playing with such a great concentration on that seamlessly turning track. For Indian team Sunil was no less than Rama the great God and everyone watching the match had full faith in Sunil.
That Sunday when the game ended Gavaskar was not out and had scored his half century( or was very near to it)Never before or after I had such a wonderful experience of seeing the test match like that Banglore test.
After the rest day Gavaskar continued and as long as he was there India was in full control.Unfortunately it was a double jolt for India. Gavaskar was out on 96 and India lost by 16 runs.
It happened to be the last test match of Gavaskar and since then only Rahul Drawid came close to that type of devotion and concentration .For Gavaskar batting was like doing ' Pooja' and he certainly was at par with what Rama was in Ramayana.
I am proud that he is Hero of our generation
He will always remain my Hero .
